Rascal Oregon Chardonnay
Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This chardonnay presents notes of lemon, white peach, verbena and honeysuckle with hints of yogurt and shortbread. Upon tasting, crisp citrus fades to round ripe peach. The wine is dry and the texture is light and refreshing while gentle minerals round out the finish. Enjoy chilled on its own or with your favorite dish.
Vineyard Notes
Coles Valley Vineyard, along the Umpqua River in Southern Oregon is a spectacular site for growing Chardonnay. Hot days and cold nights are the hallmark of this vineyard. Gentle slope and aspect work together to capture the heat necessary for ripening, while the influence of the coastal breeze moving up the river helps cool the site in the late afternoon/early evening, preserving acidity.
Production Notes
2020 began with a cool, wet spring. Budbreak was tracking in a normal pattern, while rain during bloom caused yields to be lower than normal – focusing concentration of berry and flavor development. A cooler than normal July and August helped the fruit ripen slowly and evenly, with a heat bump in the first week of September to help finish out the year. We picked the grapes for Rascal Chardonnay just after the early September heat spike, in perfect weather.
Winemaker Notes
The grapes for this single vineyard Chardonnay were fermented separately by block and clone, as they were picked and delivered from Coles Valley Vineyard. We pressed the fruit directly upon receival and removed the solids from the juice. The wine was fermented at low temperatures for over a month to maintain freshness and aromatics. Complete Malolactic fermentation was attained to build structure and the wine was aged sur lie. The separate lots were racked and blended to give a true representation of the vineyard. Gentle bentonite fining and cold stabilization via chilling were followed by filtration for clarity.
