“Brilliant, dark ruby color. The aromatics are intense, offering scents of black currant, chocolate, and slate with supporting notes of leather, forest floor, and black tea. The palate echoes the nose delivering a black fruit-driven core with flavors of black plum, cocoa, dried herbs, allspice, and black cherry. The finish is long and lingering with supple tannins. Full-bodied and perfectly balanced with an opulent texture.”

Overview

The hallmark and defining character of all of the wines from the 2019 vintage has turned out to be minerality. As the wines have matured, we have been struck by how that minerality manifests differently in each wine. The Tinta de Toro clone of Tempranillo that is the base of this wine shows a fresh asphalt note underneath the ripe red plum and blue berry fruit aromas. The palate is defined by the block’s typical immense mouthfeel and coating tannins, but an uplift of red berry fruit and vanilla-laced espresso bean brings definition and focus. The underlying complexity is glimpsed as the finish develops with nuances of grilled bread, bittersweet chocolate, and smoked almonds. We suggest giving this wine some time to shed its youthful façade and enjoy from 2025-2033 aside grilled prawn and chorizo skewers with summer squash, zucchini, and shallots finished with Pimiento Riojano oil.
