2 Hawk Padigan Series 2018 Tempranillo

Vineyards

Although part of the Rogue Valley AVA, the 2Hawk Estate Vineyard lies in an area known locally as the Bear Creek sub-basin. The two-layered bedrock beneath our soils consists of a shallow volcanic layer, the Roxy Formation, and a deeper, softer layer of alluvial sandstone, The Payne Cliffs Formation. The Klamath Mountains uplifting event, roughly 20 million years ago, began a long erosion process that resulted in our predominately volcanic soils, which are unique to the Rogue Valley AVA. An area of cobbled river rocks in our eastern section and a sandy streak of considerably younger colluvial deposit running through the center of our vineyard site distinguish 2Hawk from neighboring vineyards. Overall, we have some of the oldest soils in the valley and they are characterized as shallow silty- to clayey-loams that are moderately well drained with moderate to rapid runoff.

Tasting Notes

Our estate Rogue Valley vineyard is perfectly suited to growing exceptional Tempranillo, as evidenced by this outstanding wine. Our manicured vines delivered fruit with astonishing ripeness, aromatic complexity and depth of flavor. Following a long fermentation by our wild vineyard yeasts and extended maceration on the skins the wine slowly evolved in proprietary French oak barrels. The nose leads with black currant fruit, blackberry compote, spiced pipe tobacco, and fresh tanned leather followed by unctuously ripe black fruit and toasted peppercorns on the palate. Our loamy clay volcanic soils give the wine a silken texture and weightless power while the finish unfolds effortlessly across the palate.  The pinnacle of our efforts, this wine will age gracefully through at least 2030-2035 and transport the mind to a sun-drenched Spanish bodega when paired with roasted Pernil rubbed with smoked paprika, oregano, and garlic paste or, if in a contemplative mood, a Partagas Series P No. 2.
