Poliziano Le Caggiole Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2018

93 pts – Wine Spectator

“Features a fine balance between the cherry, currant, earth, wild thyme and eucalyptus flavors, with a firm backbone of tannins and juicy acidity. Well-delineated and long, this red is complex and refined.” WINE SPECTATOR

94 pts – James Suckling

“A firm and fine Vino Nobile with cherry, berry and lightly earthy aromas. Crushed stone. Medium body. Linear finish. A little tight now. Give it two or three years. Try after 2024.” JAMES SUCKLING

The first Caggiole was launched in 1988 and disappeared again as early as 1995 because the flagship Asinone simply met consumers’ tastes better. Today – after more than 20 years of abstinence – the Nobile Le Caggiole is back on the market as the new first wine of the house. Estate owner Dott. Federico Carletti has dedicated this masterpiece to his wife Anna – setting a new benchmark for Poliziano and the entire denomination. We are very pleased to present this strictly limited top wine!

Only tradition and knowledge can allow us to face the future: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “Le Caggiole” is reborn. An important work that has led to awareness of the very high quality yield of the “Le Caggiole” vineyard which, studied, cared for and replanted, has made it possible to produce a great Sangiovese that is never muscular but elegant and refined. A meditation wine.

THE VINEYARD

The 14-hectare Le Caggiole vineyard is located at an altitude of 350 m above sea level, on the road that leads from Montepulciano to Gracciano. Not far from the Asinone vineyard, it has a completely different microclimate and geological profile from the latter. The exposure of the vines is east, the soil is decidedly sandy, of marine origin.

The studied choice of rootstocks and Sangiovese clones, the planting layout and the type of soil and environment give the wine a refined and sweet flavour, with salty hints and a very gentle tannin on the palate.
